Claire Hughes was a gifted potter and a true artist. She was an founding member of our "Group Of Seven." We all loved Claire and learned from her - from her dedication to her art; from her commitment to her fellow artists, and from her passion for the earth, for nature, for life and for a really good laugh. Some of Claire's pottery remains on display in our gallery.
Claire died at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2008.
Born in 1928, Claire attended the University of California, Los Angeles, and studied dance.
Before moving to Idyllwild in 1973, Claire lived a rich and varied life. But, Idyllwild spoke to her soul. She loved the mountains and the way of life here. As an avid hiker and camper, she could often be found on nearby trails.
She also loved the creative atmosphere in Idyllwild, and was a frequent visitor of Idyllwild Arts, taking advantage of performances and summer classes.
Her independent spirit and dedication to her artwork inspired everyone around her.
